What Do Lactation Consultants Do?
Troubleshoot
Lactation consultants observe breastfeeding sessions to identify issues such as poor latch, inadequate milk transfer, or discomfort for the mother or baby.
Personalized Care Plans
Based on their assessment, lactation consultants develop individualized care plans tailored to the specific needs and goals of each mother-baby dyad.
1:1 Education
Lactation consultants offer valuable information and education on breastfeeding techniques, positioning, and proper latch to ensure effective and comfortable breastfeeding.
Pumping & Bottle-Feeding
Lactation consultants provide guidance on breast pumping techniques, selecting appropriate breast pumps, flange sizing, and safely storing and feeding expressed breast milk.
What’s an iBCLC?
IBCLCs (International Board Certified Lactation Consultants) are healthcare professionals who carry a wealth of expertise in breastfeeding and lactation management. Their certification, which is recognized globally, is a testament to their extensive training and their commitment to supporting breastfeeding families. They undergo rigorous coursework, complete between 500-1,000 hours of supervised clinical lactation practice, and pass a comprehensive exam to ensure they can offer the highest level of care. Whether it’s helping to establish breastfeeding, addressing challenges such as latching difficulties, or providing guidance on pumping and storing breast milk, IBCLCs are equipped to assist families through it all.
What are my next steps?
Finding an IBCLC lactation consultant can be difficult. We like to make it simple.
1. Check Insurance Coverage
We partner with The Lactation Network, where potentially up to six in-home visits are in-network with the following companies: Highmark, Anthem, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, and United Healthcare.
2. No TLN Coverage?
Click the button to complete Pittsburgh Doula Network’s registration form. We will provide a superbill so you can apply for third-party reimbursement.
3. Schedule Your Visit
Your lactation consultant will contact you to introduce themself and schedule an in-home or virtual lactation consult, depending on your preference.
