What Does a Birth Doula Do?
Advocate
Doulas advocate for the birthing person’s preferences and help facilitate communication between the laboring individual and medical staff. While they do not replace medical professionals, they can assist in ensuring that the birthing person’s wishes are respected.
Emotional Support
Doulas offer encouragement, reassurance, and a calming presence. They help the birthing person and their partner cope with the emotional challenges that may arise during labor and childbirth.
Physical Support
Doulas use various comfort measures such as massage, positioning suggestions, and breathing techniques to help ease the discomfort of labor. They do not provide medical or clinical care but work alongside healthcare professionals.
Educate
Doulas provide information and education about the birthing process, available options, and potential interventions. They empower the birthing person to make informed decisions about their care.
